Of course, Vidya has done some easily forgettable characters too, but overall her special choice of roles describes her as an actor brave enough to break the stereotypes. And 'The Dirty Picture' holds much promise.

Her first film 'Bhalo Theko' in Bengali had shown her as a lonely lover who wants to live life to the fullest but is abandoned by everyone. The way she had adapted to the requirements of the role, was a clear indication of what acting meant to her.

Rumour has it that Silk Smitha's brother has sued the film makers for not taking the permission of the family before making the movie.

She has received sufficient flack from critics who have said that she does not have the looks to portray Silk Smitha.

Vidya Balan has spoken about the role and admitted that it was one of the hardest roles to play.

From Shivaji Ganeshan and Kamal Hasan to Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi, there was not a single actor, who wanted their films to be released without Silk's name on the poster.

Her popularity can be imagined by the fact that she appeared in more than 450 films in a career of 17 years.

However, her sultry complexion was soon noticed and she made it to the screen. Smitha became famous as a great dancer in no time.

Queen of box office, Silk Smitha was born in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, in the year 1960, and was educated up to fourth standard. Her aspirations took her to south India's prime film hub Kodambakkam, where she started as a simple make up girl.
